  • NUTRITIONAL APPROACHES SUPPORT THE BODY AGAINST VIRUSES

    "Flu season" is here. It's hard to escape it—as evidenced by sick friends and coworkers—and maybe yourself or family members. Not to mention exhortations to get flu shots in the media and elsewhere.

    Flu indeed dominates health news during the winter. This year it coincides with massive media coverage on the Ebola virus.

    Are flu shots worth taking to protect against viral illness? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) admits the flu shot may not be effective this year.

    In fact, the flu vaccine may offer offer little protection. There are simply too many influenza strains to cover. This year's vaccine was in production when CDC realized the vaccine does not include the most virulent strain of the season.

    What about protection against other viruses? There are thousands. Yet, there are many things you can do to ensure your body can defend itself.

    From a perspective of natural healing, the best—and perhaps only—thing to do to combat viruses is establish good health and strong immunity, and then maintain them.

    More specifically, natural nutritional approaches supporting the body against viruses include:

    1) Establish solid foundational nutrition and optimal nutrients intake though diet and nutritional supplements

    2) Build immunity by natural means, including specific immune-enhancing formulas.

    3) Take appropriate natural antimicrobial (e.g., antiviral) supplements, including certain herbs, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients.

    The list of approaches is not comprehensive. There exist other natural means supporting the body against viruses that are not specifically nutritional. For example, infrared saunas, hydrotherapy, and various forms of exercise support strong immunity and optimal health in the body. Many approaches are discussed in the HPDI Rejuvenation Program (see below) other than nutrition.

    The Rejuvenation Program addresses various health-building practices, including preventing toxicity and detoxification (including related products like Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula and Hepa Plus) that can powerfully support good health. However, this article primarily focuses on nutritional approaches supporting the body defending itself against viruses.

    ESTABLISH POWERFUL NUTRITION SUPPORTING THE BODY AGAINST VIRUSES

    Establishing and maintaining good nutrition is perhaps the highest priority item when seeking to build optimal health. The kind of health necessary to keep the body and its immune system strong when exposed to viruses.

    THE HPDI REJUVENATION PROGRAM

    HPDI offers ideas and suggestions for establishing and maintaining good health and strong immunity that can help you fight viruses.

    Many of the ideas and programs are found in detail in the HPDI Rejuvenation Program. (You will hear a lot about that in this article.)

    First and foremost, we believe health begins with diet and nutrition, including Foundational Supplements. This is the first part of the Rejuvenation Program.

    HEALTHY DIET: WHOLE FOODS & SUPERFOODS

    This article will not address diet in detail. However, the HPDI Rejuvenation Program generally emphasizes a balanced, varied diet, consisting of whole, high-density foods, including many vegetables and other plant foods. It favors organically grown and pesticide- and chemical-free foods. A certain level of raw foods is desirable.

    The Rejuvenation Program is not prescriptive about what any given individual should eat. Individuals have different dietary needs depending on many factors, including age, level of exercise, blood type, metabolic type, food sensitivities, etc.

    Certainly it is best to avoid consuming processed foods, refined foods, as well as high-sugar and other nutritionally depleted foods. In addition, the foods produced by industrial agriculture (i.e., foods containing synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified (GMO) foods are best avoided. In addition, ingredients like artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, as well as deleterious additives, fillers, excipients and other non-nutrients or anti-nutrients.

    Important dietary recommendations in the Rejuvenation Program include consuming fresh vegetable juices and smoothies, high-density foods (like chia seeds), and relatively high levels of dietary nucleic acids (like those found in Rejuvenate! superfoods).

    In summary, the HPDI Rejuvenation Program recommends:

    – A Balanced Diet

    IMPORTANCE OF FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

    What distinguishes HPDI's Rejuvenation Program from other health and wellness programs,  supplement systems, diets, or detoxification protocols is its emphasis on a complete system of nutritional supplements and a comprehensive approach to supporting optimal health and well-being.

    MAJORITY OF PEOPLE NUTRITIONALLY DEFICIENT

    Many people take a daily multivitamin or essential fats, for example. Yet, the fact remains most people do not obtain all the nutrition they require either from foods or from supplements. One reason is that many people do not know which supplements or group of supplements they should take that constitutes a complete nutritional supplement program.     BUILD STRONG IMMUNITY (AGAINST VIRUSES)

    Building powerful immunity depends substantially on how well the body is nourished. That is, how completely the body receives the nutrition required to support its general good health and enable it to defend itself . But that is not all.

    When it comes to defending the body against viruses, two specific types of formulas can play important roles beyond diet and foundational supplements. These are 1) immunity building formulas that include specific substances/nutrients known to support a robust immune system and 2) Formulas that include nutrients/herbs/substances acting as antivirals and antimicrobials in the body.

    Many specific immune-building formulas/nutrients, as well as formulas acting as antivirals are included among HPDI's Enhancement Formulas. These formulas include Immune-Assist™ (medicinal mushrooms), olive leaf extract, Cordyceps, Vitamin D3 Plus, Nascent Iodine, Selenium, Zinc, silver (SilverBiotics Polyvalent silver), and magnesium formulas. Some of these formulas are described in detail in Part Five of the HPDI Rejuvenation Program, as well as below.

    Other immune-building foods/herbs and antiviral substances like echinacea and garlic are also part of the Rejuvenation Program. For example, echinacea is considered in Part Five, and garlic is discussed in Part Six as its own supporting protocol. Other supporting protocols include hydrotherapy and sauna therapy. Thus, most of HPDI's immune-building and antiviral type formulas fall into either the category of Enhancement Formulas or Supporting Protocols. In a few cases, certain supplement formulas or recommended foods/herbs both build immunity and act directly as antivirals (e.g., garlic).

    Note: there are other important nutrients like glutathione, quercetin, and certain liposomal forms of nutrients (e.g., vitamin C) that we won't go cover in this article, but that can be useful for immunity against viruses. While this article is not intended to be comprehensive, our goal nevertheless is to provide resources that can help anyone seeking optimal health.

    IMMUNE-BUILDING FORMULAS

    As mentioned, immune-building formulas in the HPDI system usually fall into the category of Enhancement Formulas. Enhancement Formulas are the "next-level" of defense built upon the Foundational Supplements.

    That is, after individuals have established high nutrient intake using foundational supplements, we typically recommend Enhancement Formulas next because of their unique capacities to support and build health.

    While not all Enhancement Formulas specifically build immunity, most of them support health in ways that strengthen immunity. (Note: Another category of HPDI supplements is Specific Condition Formulas designed to address a specific problem or issue.)

    While there are various immune-building formulas in the HPDI system, we focus on a select few in this article.

    SELECTED ENHANCEMENT FORMULAS

    IMMUNE-ASSIST™

    Medicinal mushroom are proven immune boosters. When various species are combined in a single formula, the product provides the benefits of each type of mushroom. HPDI offers several medicinal mushroom formulas, including Immune-Assist™.

    Immune-Assist™ contains a combination of more than 200 different polysaccharides, derived from the enzymatic breakdown of complex organic plant material from six different species of medicinal mushrooms.     Immune-Assist™ is similar to other mushroom-based polysaccharides in that it is formulated through an enzymatically activated process whereby complex cross-linked polysaccharides from vegetable sources are converted to biologically active immunomodulators composed of simpler sugars (such as arabinose and xylose).     VITAMIN D3 PLUS

    Every week it seems, new studies report more information on the importance of Vitamin D for health. Among its many benefits: immunity boosting effects. Vitamin D has been shown to reduce the incidence of seasonal flu, for example. (See Vitamin D Abstracts in the resources section below.)

    But it does so much more. That's why we include it as an HPDI Enhancement Formula and have designed our own product that includes vitamins A and K2 (as MK-7) known to improve utilization of vitamin D in the body.

    Vitamin D3 Plus is an advanced Vitamin D formula providing high-dose Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is the natural form of Vitamin D produced in the body from sunlight and is the form best used for therapeutic purposes.

    Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin increasingly known as a nutrient essential for health and well-being.     NASCENT IODINE

    Nascent Iodine is the ideal form of iodine, rapidly absorbed and used by the body when taken as a nutritional supplement. Iodine is associated with a wide range of benefits, not limited to supporting thyroid function and regulating metabolism, boosting energy levels (when iodine is deficient), supporting and maintaining detoxification systems and processes, supporting immune system function, fighting infections (natural antiseptic), and many other healthy benefits.     POLYVALENT SILVER

    Colloidal silver is a proven antimicrobial. It is highly effective against a broad range of viruses, bacteria, and fungi. It can help you combat these microbes.

    HPDI offers a Silver Biotics® product made using a patented method to produce nano-silver particles suspended in a medium of highly purified water. The Silver Biotics® particles have been defined as a metallic nano-silver particle with a thin coating of polyvalent silver oxide.

    The patented production method supercharges the silver particles using 10,000 volts AC, whereas other colloidal silver solutions are typically only charged with 100 volts DC. A mineral nutrient (i.e., magnesium) that can increase cellular energy thereby has the capacity to improve the health of the entire human body (i.e., all organ systems) via providing the energy for sustaining them all.

    Magnesium is critical for cell metabolism. It helps to transport other minerals across cell membranes and affects cell mechanisms controlling muscle and nerve cell activity.

    Unlike any other form of magnesium, magnesium chloride is a known infection fighter. As early as 1915, the French surgeon, professor of clinical surgery, and French Academy of Sciences member Dr. Pierre Delbet (1861–1957) used magnesium chloride solution to cleanse wounds in soldiers injured during the First World War. He had searched for an antiseptic that could disinfect wounds, but would not damage tissue (and thereby encourage mortification) as did other antiseptics then available. He reported that magnesium chloride was superior to traditional antiseptics not only in its effectiveness in treating wounds, but also because it did not harm body tissues.

    Dr. Delbet discovered that magnesium chloride solution increased leucocyte activity and phagocytosis (i.e., the destruction of pathogenic microbes) when applied externally (i.e., used transdermally). He performed numerousin vitro and in vivo studies using magnesium chloride solution. These experiments led to his discovery that magnesium chloride was a potent immune stimulant whether applied externally (i.e., transdermal application), injected intravenously, or taken by mouth (i.e., consumed orally). He termed this immunity boosting effect “cytophilaxis” (a cytophylactic is a substance that protects cells and encourages their healthy growth). In this regard, he observed increased phagocytosis (the engulfing of pathogens by white blood cells) by up to 300 percent. That is, white blood cells were three times more effective at destroying microbes than before administration of magnesium chloride.

    The pioneering efforts of Dr. Delbet were followed in the 1940s by fellow French physician Dr. A. Neveu. Dr. Neveu confirmed the immuno-stimulant effects of magnesium chloride, and he successfully tested magnesium therapy for wide range of conditions.     Soil based organisms (SBO) may be among the most important things for your health. No kidding.

    Studies show SBOs confer a host of healthy benefits. While certain benefits provided by SBOs may overlap with those conferred by lactobacteria-based probiotics, it is apparent that soil based organisms offer significant advantages.

    In fact, Fred wrote an article on probiotics last year covering a new type of probiotic and prebiotic formula that provides soil based organisms. Studies on the human microbiome are revealing many surprises that give us a new understanding of the importance of soil based organisms for human gut ecology.

    Scientific research on the beneficial roles played by bacteria for human health is advancing rapidly. In 2012, Hank wrote short piece titled, "A New View of the Role of Bacteria in Health." A key point he explains in that article is the fact that the our body's microbiome contains 99 times more genetic material that is non-human (i.e., bacterial) than human!!

    Another key point is that bacteria living on (and in) us possesses a sophisticated communication system enabling them to "talk" in both intraspecies and interspecies ways using a kind of hormone signaling language. Hank cites the 2009 TED talk of Princeton molecular biologist Dr. Bonnie Bassler who studies how bacteria communicate with each other through chemical signals that allow groups of bacteria to act as a unit, i.e., take collective action.

    Dr. Bassler's groundbreaking research holds promise as medical research, and supports the idea that probiotics, including soil based organisms (SBO) play essential roles in human health and wellness. In fact, the major implication of current discoveries regarding roles played by bacteria in the human microbiome is that beneficial bacteria are far more important for health than previously understood.

    A practical application of new knowledge regarding the human microbiome may simply be the recognition that increased consumption of soil based organisms is good for us.

    WHAT ARE SOIL BASED ORGANISMS (SBO)?

    There are thousands of different types of bacteria found naturally in soils. These bacteria in soil and dirt historically performed many beneficial functions for us.     Up until 100 years ago (or less for some people), soil based organisms were an everyday part of the diet. Not that long ago, our country was comprised mostly of farmers. At that time, almost everyone would have consumed soil based organisms on vegetables and other foods from the fields, gardens, and orchards.

    Nowadays due to lack of exposure to soil based organisms resulting from modern food processing systems and the extensive use of pesticides that destroy the organisms, the average person has a very different composition of intestinal flora from their ancestors. There are far fewer soil based organisms, and more lactic acid bacteria. In addition, the use of antibiotics for young children has further swayed the balance away from these beneficial bacteria.

    SOIL BASED ORGANISMS ARE DIFFERENT THAN LACTOBACTERIA

    Most people today either take or are aware of the benefits of probiotics containing lactic acid-based bacteria. These include commonly known strains of lactobacilli and bifidobacteria. Lactic-acid bacteria certainly are beneficial. There is a large body of research showing their high value for supporting digestion, immunity, and many other benefits. But they do have certain limitations.

    Many of the lactic acid bacteria in probiotic formulas have difficulty making it through the stomach's acidic environment. Thus, the bacteria arrive in the small intestine in vastly reduced numbers compared to the amount that must be consumed. Nutritionists therefore usually recommend taking probiotics with a large number of "colony forming units" (CFU) in order to ensure viability of the bacteria.

    In addition, the benefits conferred by taking lactic acid bacteria may depend upon continuing usage. That is, certain studies indicate the benefits of these bacteria are greatly reduced after usage ends.

    Soil based organisms offer several advantages compared to lactic-acid bacteria. First, they are extremely hardy and better able to withstand the acidic environment in the stomach. They are in fact, "endospore-forming" bacteria that surround themselves in a hard exterior that travels more effectively through the intestinal tract.

    This means soil based organisms are far more likely to arrive intact in the small intestines (where they need to be) than lactobacteria. It also means that products containing soil-based organisms can provide fewer colony forming units and still be effective. That is, probiotic supplements with soil based organisms are more efficient at getting CFUs into the small intestines. It also eliminates or reduces the need for special coatings,  manufacturing processes, or "delivery systems" that must be created as a means to improve delivery rates of lactic acid bacteria.

    Soil based organisms have also been shown to colonize the gut more effectively than lactic-acid bacteria. This may partially relate to the fact that they are hardier and make it to the small intestines in greater numbers. A major benefit is that this characteristic of SBOs may allow a reduction is dosage onto a "maintenance" level sooner without concerns that benefits of probiotic supplementation will disappear.

    This chelation of ions is probably the most important role of humic acids with respect to living systems. By chelating the ions, they facilitate the uptake of these ions by several mechanisms, one of which is preventing their precipitation, another appears to be a direct and positive influence on their bioavailability.

    Humic acid and fulvic acid have been the subject of many years of scientific study not only because of their role in soil and plant biology, but also with respect to their chelation capabilities. That is, for their proven capacities in removing heavy metals from the human body.

    Humic and fulvic acids bind only with double valency positive cations, i.e., nutritional elements and/or heavy metal ions. It is likely that a heavy metal ion will displace a lighter, nutritional metal ion and bind with the humate or fulvate.

    Many health care practitioners recommend fulvic acid as an electrolyte (to increase cellular electrical efficiency) and supplement to take in combination with trace mineral supplements in order to assist in their uptake by the body. Fulvic acid bonds with these minerals. Because it is a small molecule and therefore easily able to pass through cell membranes, it allows delivery of the minerals efficiently into cells.

    Most products are based on processed humate, taken from high quality soil sources, containing large amounts of nutritional cations already bound into the matrix.     Humic acids can form a protective film on the mucuous epithelium of the gastrointestinal tract against infections and toxins. The macrocolloidal structure of humic acids ensures a good shielding on the mucous membrane of the stomach and gut, the peripheral capillaries, and damaged mucosal cells. As a result of this process, the resorption of toxic metabolites is reduced or fully prevented, especially after infections, in case of residues of harmful substances in foods. Furthermore, humic acids help to prevent excessive loss of water via the intestine.

    Humic acids can influence the metabolism of proteins and carbonhydrates of microbes by catalytic means. This leads to a directly damaging effect against bacteria or viruses. A second mechanism is related to the interionic bonds of high-molecular protein fractions (toxins) of infectious microbes. Their toxic impact on physiological processes of mucous membrane cells can be weakened considerably or even completely blocked.

    Antiphlogical effects

    Dermal, oral, or subcutaneous application of humic acids leads to inhibitory effects on inflammation. The ability to inhibit inflammation is considered to be related with the flavonoid groups contained in humic acids.

    Antiresorptive and adsorptive effects

    As high-molecular humic acids remain in the gastrointestinal tract almost entirely following the enteral application (there is no self-resorption), antiresorptive and adsorptive effects take place where they are needed—in the digestive tract. Primarily cationoid noxes (protein toxins, toxic substances) are fixed, their resorption is reduced considerably or even prevented completely and their elimination through the bowel is promoted. As adsorption by humic acids includes not only physical and chemical reactions, but also complex-formation and ion-exchange, it is more intensive and dynamic compared to purely physical adsorbents.

    Effects on the immune system

    Humic acids stimulate the resistance forces of the body and lead to an increase in the phagocytosis activity. The inducer effect of phenolic components (groups) of humic acids is believed to be responsible for the immunological effects and is the basis for the success of the treatment of the so-called "factor" diseases in young animals.

    Ergotropic effects

    Humic acids stabilize the intestinal flora, thereby ensuring improved utilization of nutrients in foods. This leads to an increase in liveweight of the animal without increasing the amount of feed given to the animal.

    "If I wanted to jam pack as much ZING/Nutrition/Taste into a 2–3 oz shot for work every morning...WHAT ingredients would you recommend I blend together?"

    As I began thinking about his question, I realized many people could benefit from my answer. Certainly many of our customers are satisfied using HPDI's multivitamins, Rejuvenate!™ superfoods,  and other foundational supplements to create optimal nutrition. There's no question I've formulated many highly nutrient-dense antioxidant formulas, multivitamins, and superfoods.

    But his question focuses on how to blend up a shot-type concoction offering highly concentrated nutrition in just a few ounces of nutritional drink. Here was a challenge about which I felt confident we could succeed. But I had no way of predicting exactly what our nutritional drink would look like. We had to build it.

    My team set to work in the kitchen creating and sampling drinks that would satisfy these requirements. And that could provide answers to his question about how to pack nutrition, taste, and "zing" into highly concentrated shot-type drinks.

    Fast forward to today. After much tasting and tinkering, we have created a practically "perfect" nutritional drink! Now we can our provide answers to the original question.

    FORMULATING CONCENTRATED NUTRITIONAL DRINKS

    I have been creating nutritional drinks in my own life for a long time. And many of my professional formulation efforts have focused on providing super nutrition. As I see it, here are the basic requirements for this type of concentrated nutritional drink:

    "YAY" & "WOW" FACTORS!!

    "Wow!" That was our first response to the drinks we concocted. The taste is there, and it we love it. The nutrition is there, and we feel it. The fact this drink is so nutritionally dense and delicious contribute marvelously to its fulfilling character. Fresh, live ingredients (like the raw berries and chia seeds) also contribute mightily to its overall satisfying taste and feel.

    This drink is enjoyable when sipped, but it's not too finicky to be downed as a shot. It's versatile. "Yay!"

    We often enjoy nutritional drinks chilled, although that may be especially the case as warmer temperatures approach. It's still winter (at least sort of winter-like here in Arizona this year) and to us this drink tastes equally good at room temperature. You can probably taste some of its finer nuances when it's unchilled. Of course, whether you chill your nutritional drink is up to you and your taste buds.

    However you choose to prepare it, the basic nutritional drink formula should provide all the taste, nutrition, and "zing" you crave! We are pleased we can provide many of the basic ingredients you'll need to create such delicious, healthy concoctions.

    So "Cheers!," "Bon appetite!," Bottom's Up!" or whatever phrase you like best. We love our nutritional drinks. We hope you enjoy yours!

    FINAL THOUGHTS

    There are many variations of the basic formula we have given for tasty morning super nutritional drinks. Don't feel compelled to make it exactly our way. Create a variation that suits your taste, or try creating different variations. In any case, there will be high density nutrition if you include most of the basic ingredients (e.g., Rejuvenate! superfoods, Ultimate Protector™, PRO-C™, Myo-Mag, etc.).

    As fast and easy as making nutritional drinks can be, you might also try preparing your drink the night before the morning you consume it. That is, just because you may not have time every morning to make the drink doesn't mean you can't enjoy it anyway. Just whip it up the night before and keep it in the refrigerator. The many antioxidant nutrients (e.g., provided by PRO-C™ and Ultimate Protector™) in the drink will keep it fresh, entact, and help preserve its nutritional value.

    UPDATE: January 6, 2014 - My colleague, Mark Sircus, published an article today concerning the status of the Fukushima situation. In his article, Mark states: "A public health official detected increased radiation levels on a California beach showing radiation levels at approximately 500% of normal levels. On the beach is exactly where you do not want to go and it looks like the further from the Pacific Ocean you are the longer you are going to live."

    Mark's article continues: "Michael Snyder was saying last week, 'The west coast of the United States is being absolutely fried by radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster, and the mainstream media is not telling us the truth about this. Most models display that the western coast and the middle belt of the U.S. will get the brunt of the radiation.'"

    In light of the current situation, including recent reports regarding the possible meltdown of Fukushima reactor three, we believe it is important for everyone to familiarize themselves with methods to protect their health against the effects of radiation coming from Fukushima. In August 2013, I published an extensive updated article on the ways in which this can be done and have included it below.     UPDATE: August 30, 2013 - Recent critical developments in Fukushima, Japan have revealed the release of massive quantities of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean. An article published in National Geographic magazine on 8/21/13 provides details concerning the latest radioactive leak. These revelations make it necessary for everyone to remember that effective action can be taken to protect yourself and your loved ones from the damaging effects of released nuclear radiation. I wrote the following article (which includes a radiation protocol) and first published it on the HPDI blog in July 2012. Today's version is significantly revised and expanded. I include a discussion of Ultimate Protector™ and how its Nrf2 activators help heal DNA damage from ionizing radiation. – Dr. Hank Liers

    Since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami crisis in Japan, I receive many inquiries about emergency preparation, protection from radiation, and detoxification. These questions typically focus on the means to maintain health during catastrophic events. I’m pleased to offer suggestions depending on individual needs. However, my recommendations always start with the HPDI Master Rejuvenation Program. The program is the foundation on which to build and maintain excellent health under all circumstances. It starts well before radiation exposure is an issue.

    More recently, it has become clear that the nuclear reactor situation in Fukushima, Japan is actually far worse than has been publicly acknowledged. According to physicist Michio Kaku PhD, the threat from the spent fuel pool in reactor building number four is near the tipping point. A small earthquake, another pipe break, or another explosion could tip it over, and we could have a disaster many times worse than Chernobyl nuclear disaster in 1986.

    Dr. Kaku explains that just in the last few weeks it has been reported that reactors two, three, and four have been shown to be in a very dire situation. Reactor two is completely liquefied, something that’s never been seen in the history of nuclear power. Reactor four, on the other hand, has an even worse problem because it is a spent fuel pond that is totally uncovered because of a hydrogen explosion that took place last year. Dr. Kaku concludes we have a worldwide catastrophe in the making. Unfortunately, the probability is high that this catastrophe may happen.

    In view of the above, I have prepared this special adaptation of our Master Rejuvenation Program. It provides insight and practical advice about how you can prepare for such a catastrophe, as well as protect yourself, your family, and your community.

    MY SUGGESTED PROGRAM
    (ADAPTED FROM HPDI'S MASTER REJUVENATION PROGRAM)

    1) COMMITMENT

    Your commitment to yourself, family, and community to remain healthy during this potential catastrophe is the crucial first step to being successful. I have observed many naysayers claiming that this event represents the end of humanity. However, there are many sources of wisdom and knowledge in the area of radiation protection that can provide solutions for remaining healthy. I will review some of these below.

    One of the critical lessons learned from how people and organizations (including governments) react during crisis is that you must take responsibility for yourself because no one else will do it! This involves your learning about the problem and solutions and implementing your own personal plan. We will support you in this process.

    2) PREVENT TOXICITY

    With regard to radiation, there are some important issues usually not present in most non-radiation prevention programs. In the situation in Fukushima Japan, radiation from toxins such as iodine-131, cesium-137, strontium-90 and plutonium are the major issue. These radioactive particles blow through the air where they can be inhaled, attach to skin and clothing, fall onto food that is either eaten directly or indirectly from the food chain, and settle on the ground and structures where they accumulate and continue to emit radiation for long periods of time.

    It may be wise to have access to the radiation data measured in your locality so that you have some idea of the magnitude of the problem you are facing. In this regard we recommend that you use a computer to visit the following website: http://radiationnetwork.com/. This website, home of the National Radiation Map, depicts environmental radiation levels across the USA, updated in real time every minute. This is the first web site where the average citizen (or anyone in the world) can see what radiation levels are anywhere in the USA at any time.

    The first step in this program is to avoid contact with radioactive particles as much as possible. This means that you need to avoid to the extent possible exposure to outside air. I recommend using a mask that can filter out the radioactive particles from inhalation. The clothing you wear is also important; consider wearing long sleeve shirts, hats, and long pants to cover your body. The clothing should be changed immediately upon entering your home and it should be kept in a separate room from normal indoor living activities. Clothing should be washed frequently. I also suggest that you take frequent showers to wash radioactive particles from your body.

    Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems should be configured in such a way that all outside air is adequately filtered so that it cannot contaminate your living/working spaces. The filters should be changed as necessary to avoid the excessive buildup of radioactive particles.

    Before consumption, all produce and other foods exposed to radiation should be washed and rinsed in vinegar solution and then in baking soda solution so that you avoid eating the radioactive particles to the greatest extent possible. It will be impossible to avoid ingesting some radioactive particles. I therefore recommend taking HPDI’s Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula on a regular basis as long as a radiation risk is present. This formula contains ingredients such as charcoal, bentonite, psyllium, and apple pectin known to latch onto radioactive particles and allow them to pass through the GI tract and into your stools.

    3) DETOXIFY

    It is well known by healers around the world that a well functioning GI tract is critical for good health. This means the food you ingest is quickly and properly broken down into nutrients that your body needs, and unabsorbed food components and body waste from your liver quickly pass through your bowels. It also means that you maintain healthy intestinal flora (“good” bacteria population). In fact, it is believed by many, that 80% (or more) of human health problems initially arise from improper GI tract function. Commonly, the first step a healer will implement in a program is to cleanse and detoxify the GI tract.

    Constipation is an extremely common problem in our society and dealing with this issue is the most important starting item. In this regard, Intestinal Corrective Formula #1 (cathartic formula) should be used to keep your bowels active. I recommend that you start with one capsule just after dinner and increase by one capsule daily until the desired effect is reached (i.e., three bowel movements per day). This product can be purchased from American Botanical Pharmacy (800.437.2362). An alternative/complementary method I recommend for increasing movement of bowels is to use Buffered C powder (one or more heaping teaspoons several times daily) and/or Myo-Mag (three or more capsules several times daily).

    Once the bowels are moving correctly, I suggest using HPDI’s Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula. Use this bowel drawing, healing, and detoxification tonic every day to keep your bowel clean. This one-of-a-kind formula powerfully supports the health of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It cleanses the entire digestive tract by drawing toxins, clearing blockages, and supporting natural movement. It works by coating and adhering to the lining of the intestines. This action allows it to absorb fecal plaques and other debris, soften unhealthy deposits, and sweep them away for elimination in the stool. Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula neutralizes and removes hundreds of toxins, including heavy metals (e.g., mercury and lead) and radioactive particles. It draws out many times its weight in material encrusted or trapped in the intestinal lining.     4) THE FOOD PROGRAM

    I advise consuming as much organic raw food as possible. This includes vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, and soaked or sprouted beans and whole grains. Eat fresh organic produce, preferably in season and locally grown. It may not be possible to eat even as much as 50% raw organic foods under conditions of radiation exposure. However, it is important nonetheless to consume as much raw, organic, locally grown food as possible. It is important to ascertain whether any fresh produce you eat has been exposed to significant amounts of radiation and to decontaminate it (e.g., by washing), if necessary. I also suggest that you consider growing sprouts from seeds indoors (such as broccoli, clover, alfalfa, etc.)

    An interesting finding from Chernobyl is that milk from cows fed grass grown on soil enriched with rock dust contained little or no radiation even though milk of nearby cows fed grass grown on soils not enriched with rock dust contained radiation (see: http://remineralize.org/blog/magazine/from-chernobyl-to-japan-treating-radiation-sickness-with-rock-dust). This finding demonstrates the importance of ingesting foods containing significant amounts of trace minerals. Unfortunately, food (even organic) harvested from land not remineralized may not contain the amounts of trace minerals needed by people for good health. Means of getting obtaining mineralized plant foods include purchasing foods grown biodynamically (see: http://biodynamic-farming.com/) or by growing your own vegetables using rock dust, worm castings/tea, compost, etc. (See: http://www.fertilizeronline.com/rockdust.php).

    I strongly suggest that you consume at least four scoops per day (e.g., two scoops in the morning and two scoops in the afternoon or evening) of Rejuvenate!™ Plus, Rejuvenate!™ Berries & Herbs, or original Rejuvenate!™. The RNA in these superfoods is highly effective in regenerating and repairing tissues damaged by radiation. The chlorella and spirulina in most of these superfoods can remove toxic metals (such as Cesium-137, Strontium-90, and Plutonium) from your body. Please consume the following nutritional drink (mix in a blender): blend 16–32 ounces of vegetable juice (made fresh in your juicer) and one scoop of Rejuvenate!™ (any formula). You may add garlic cloves, ginger root, and fresh cayenne peppers for additional therapeutic benefits. Try adding 2–3 capsules of PRO-C™ to the drink.

    You should drink 32–64 ounces of fresh vegetable juice daily. Buy a juicer if you don't already have one (as it can save your life!). I recommend the Green Power twin gear juicer, the Hurom slow juicer, or Breville Elite juicer (all available online).

    Drink only purified and/or ionized water (I like the TyentUSA or Jupiter water ionizers) with a pH of about 9.0. If you do not have a water ionizer, you can add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda per 8 oz water several times daily to raise your pH. You also can alkalinize your body by consuming organic herbal teas (non-caffeine) and vegetable juices. Do not consume milk or milk products (cheese, yogurt, butter), most animal products, alcohol, coffee, or refined sugar. You may find it helpful to drink 8–12 oz of Chia Gel daily. Chia Gel is both hydrating and energizing.

    You will enjoy eating (as well as drinking the broth of) "Hank's Vegetable Soup." This is a great-tasting addition to your cleansing program. It will flush your system of unwanted salts and acids while giving you concentrated vitamins and minerals.

    5) THE BLOODSTREAM AND THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

    Take Dr. Schulze's Detox Formula (tincture) (available from the American Botanical Pharmacy) and Super Echinacea. Use two (2) droppers full (70 drops) of the tonics four (4) times daily. In addition, I recommend that you take Immune-Assist™ (at least six capsules) on a daily basis. Immune-Assist™ is derived from six organically grown medicinal mushrooms and contains over 200 polysaccharides known to improve immune function. It is the best immune system modulator I have found. It can rapidly increase your body’s natural killer cell activity. This is especially important because your immune system must clean up tissues damaged by exposure to radioactive particles.

    6) NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT PROGRAM

    It is important to include foundational supplement formulas as essential elements in your nutritional supplements program. Foundational formulas include a therapeutic multivitamin, Vitamin C/antioxidant product (e.g., PRO-C™ and/or Ultimate Protector™), and an essential fats product. These formulas along with high-RNA Rejuvenate!™ superfoods provide the basic nutrients required for the body's metabolic systems (digestion, energy production, detoxification, enzyme production, etc.) to work properly. We discuss these formulas in detail in our Foundational Supplements Program.

    Damage occurs in two ways when people (or animals) are exposed to high levels of radiation (also see: Fukushima Radiation Release is Worse than You Have Been Told: What You Can Do to Protect Yourself): 1) only about 20% of the damage occurs from the direct action of the radioactive particles on the DNA and other cellular structures and 2) the remaining 80% of the damage occurs from oxygen free radicals that occur when the radioactive particles impinge on the water in your body (you are about 60% water).

    Using this knowledge, Dr. Atsuo Yanagisawa in Japan found that when individuals are pretreated with Vitamin C at the level of about 10 grams daily along with other antioxidants such as selenium, alpha lipoic acid, glutathione, etc., then they are protected from genetic radiation damage when exposed to large dosages of radiation.

    Dr. Yanagisawa also discovered that even after individuals are exposed to large doses of radiation and suffer genetic damage, this genetic damage can be reversed by this same protocol of taking about 10 grams of Vitamin C daily along with other antioxidants. Interestingly, this is the same protocol used by many people to prevent or retard aging. This knowledge is important for anyone exposed to large dosages of radiation, such as could be released if the Fukushima reactor situation worsens. Given this information, I recommend taking PRO-C™, which contains Vitamin C and the other antioxidants (i.e., selenium, r-alpha lipoic acid, glutathione) mentioned above, is an ideal supplement for protection against radiation.     A new nutritional supplement that complements PRO-C™ in its action against radiation is the Ultimate!     Nrf2 is normally bound in the cytoplasm of cells to a protein, however, when an appropriate phytochemical agent attaches to a kinase receptor on the cell wall a phosphate group is released that causes the Nrf2 to be released. The Nrf2 then migrates into the cell nucleus and by binding to genomic antioxidant responsive element (ARE) sequences causes antioxidant enzymes to be fabricated and released. These endogenously produced enzymes (such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, etc.) then protect the body against ROS, electrophiles, and other toxic agents. A recent study provides robust evidence that Nrf2 activators protect cells from ionizing radiation and induces DNA damage repair through direct binding to the 53BP1 promoter region harboring ARE sequences.

    In practical experience, it has been found that a combination of multiple polyphenols works significantly better than single ingredients. In fact, in one experiment it was found that a combination of five ingredients all known to be Nrf2 activators was 18 times more effective than any single ingredient. Furthermore, it was found that this combination of five ingredients was able to increase levels of SOD by 30% and catalase by 56% after 120 days of taking the combination.

    We recommend Nascent Iodine (20 drops daily or more in divided doses) and Vitamin D3 Plus (5,000–10,000 IU daily) because almost everyone is deficient in iodine and Vitamin D. These nutrients are needed for detoxification, energy production and utilization, immune enhancement, and protection against major illnesses. In the event of a radiation catastrophe, it is likely you will receive less exposure to sunlight and therefore will make less of your own Vitamin D. It will be therefore be important to supplement with adequate amounts of Vitamin D.

    Please note that radioactive iodine-131 (eight day half life) is one of the elements released into the upper atmosphere after an event such as a nuclear power plant meltdown. It can be carried great distances on high-speed winds, and then fall into the lower atmosphere, where it can be breathed into the lungs. It can also contaminate crops on the ground and get into your body through food and drink. Your thyroid gland quickly absorbs radioactive iodine. Due to this gland’s tremendous affinity for iodine, it may absorb radioactive iodine in quantities that can injure or even destroy it.

    Taking non-radioactive iodine (i.e., Nascent Iodine) before and after exposure can protect your thyroid after exposure to radioactive iodine (as may be experienced through fallout). Non-radioactive iodine blocks radioactive iodine from being taken into the thyroid gland. In this way, your thyroid gland can be protected from injury. Taking non-radioactive iodine before exposure essentially "pre-fills" your thyroid with iodine leaving little or no room for radioactive iodine to be assimilated.

    If you are already taking the recommended dose of approximately 20 drops of Nascent Iodine (2%) (0.4 mg/drop) (see above), then your thyroid will be protected. However, depending upon the magnitude of the fallout from a radiation event, it would be wise to increase your Nascent Iodine intake to as high as 60–100 drops daily (in divided doses) both before and after exposure until the danger has passed. If the danger is of a prolonged duration (as would be the case with an explosion of Fukushima reactor four), then Nascent Iodine with its extremely low toxicity seems to be the only logical solution for protection of the thyroid.     Nascent Iodine

    Myo-Mag and Ubiquinol-50 act as powerful metabolic enhancers that lead to significant increases in ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production in the body. ATP is central to the body's capacity to function. Myo-Mag provides magnesium and malic acid that directly stimulate aerobic energy production in the body. Ubiquinol is also a very powerful fat-soluble antioxidant that prevents free-radical damage in the body's fat-soluble compartments, including cell membranes.

    The liver is the body's main organ of detoxification and will surely be taxed in the event of a major radiation event. I also recommend that you take NAC (N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine), another key nutrient that supports liver function and is the rate-limiting nutrient in the production of glutathione (the liver’s major detoxifying nutrient).

    Here is a summary of nutritional supplements I recommend taking for a complete program of protection both before and after a catastrophic radiation event:

    7) TRANSDERMAL MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE

    I suggest you take warm baths with 2–4 cups of Ancient Minerals Magnesium Flakes (mostly comprised of magnesium chloride but also includes trace sea minerals) along with 1–2 cups of baking soda. Taking these baths significantly raises your body’s magnesium levels (one of the most important therapies you can do). Magnesium baths allow additional trace minerals to be absorbed into your body helping to block the uptake of radioactive particles and alkalinizing your body (and thereby improving oxygen utilization). Additionally, I suggest that you spray Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil on your body (1–2 ounces daily) as an alternative means of increasing magnesium levels.

    8) LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

    I highly recommend any methods of massage and bodywork and other techniques that will significantly enhance lymphatic drainage (such as Swedish massage) as this can clear the body of toxins created by any radioactive particles! Some other practices I recommend include: skin brushing, walking, using a rebounder, using whole body vibration machines, and taking far infrared saunas.

    9) EXERCISE

    It is important to exercise every day. I strongly recommend activities such as yoga and tai chi. Exercise supports the body in many ways. It supports circulation of blood (to oxygenate tissues and detoxify) and lymph (which must be circulated via muscle movement or deep breathing). It also increases lung capacity, tones the cardiovascular system, builds bones, reduces stress chemicals, releases growth hormone, and more. I do not recommend you exercise outside during a radiation crisis. Exercising outdoors in such conditions can substantially increase your exposure to radioactive particles.

    MAXIMIZE YOUR PROTECTION TO PRESERVE HEALTH

    It is important to perform as many of these recommendations, practices, and techniques as possible in order to maximize your benefits. When you incorporate them into your life on a regular basis, you will not only be protected against radiation, but you will also gain other health benefits. These include faster healing and recovery, and better overall health. In fact, you will be pleased both by how quickly you can feel better, and by how effectively you can protect and maintain excellent health.     Fred Liers PhD Valley Fever coccidiomycosis coccidiodes immitisValley Fever (Coccidioidomycosis) is a fungal disease caused by Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii, which are fungal species endemic in areas of Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and northern Mexico. Other names for the disease include "cocci" (kok-see), "California Fever," "desert rheumatism," and "San Joaquin Valley Fever."

    C. immitis resides in the soil in the US Southwest (e.g., California and Arizona) and Mexico, as well as parts of Central America and South America. The fungus is dormant during long dry periods. When rains arrive, it then develops into a mold having long filaments, which break apart becoming airborne spores.

    The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) documents a 900% increase in reported cases of Valley Fever in endemic area during the period from 1998 to 2011. The number of annually reported Valley Fever cases spiked from about 2,000 to over 24,000 in a little more than a decade.

    Some of the dramatic rise in Valley Fever cases probably relates to better reporting practices and more reliable testing methods. For example, it was not until 2008 that the CSTE (Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists) case definition was revised to include cases with a single positive serologic result. And it wasn't until 2010 that coccidioidomycosis became laboratory-reportable in California.

    Still, the growth trend in reported cases of Valley Fever is alarming. The rise in diagnoses indicates how much larger the scope of the problem is than previously was known. For example, cases that were once left unreported or even misdiagnosed as pneumonia are more often now being properly diagnosed and reported.

    Global warming notably has resulted in increasingly dry conditions in the US Southwest favoring the spread of C. immitis. Higher temperatures boost evaporation rates, thereby drying soils. In addition to drought, increasing atmospheric instability has led to increasing numbers of dust storms (including severe dust storms and haboobs) in Arizona (e.g., Phoenix and Yuma), New Mexico, and Texas. Such intense storms dramatically increase the spread of airborne particulates, including the spores known to cause Valley Fever.

    C. immitis spores, also known as arthroconidia, become airborne whenever soil is disturbed. Activities and events disturbing soil include construction, agriculture, digging, high winds, dust storms, and earthquakes. In addition, rapid growth urban areas with high population density produce greater levels of ground disturbance (which along with other factors) adversely affect rates of incidence. Thus, Maricopa County, Arizona (including the city of Phoenix) has a surprisingly high Valley Fever incidence of about 1 in 1,125 (measured in 2007). In contrast, southern New Mexico has a ten to twenty times lower incidence rate despite also being a region where Valley Fever is endemic.

    As suggested by Kenneth K. Komatsu, the state epidemiologist for Arizona, urban sprawl is a major factor because essentially you are "digging up rural areas where Valley Fever is growing in the soil" (see "A Disease Without a Cure Spreads Quietly in the West"). 13,000 cases were reported in Arizona alone in 2012. In addition, incidence rates are considered low as most cases are not reported (ADD).

    Arthroconidia, as fungal spores typically produced by segmentation of pre-existing fungal hyphae (i.e., branched filamentous structures collectively known as a mycelium), are generally not as environmentally persistent as other types of spores (e.g., bacterial endospores). Nevertheless, C. immitis and C. posadasii remain medically significant pathogens due to increasingly high transmission rates of Valley Fever.

    INHALATION AND INFECTION OF VALLEY FEVER SPORES

    Spores causing Valley Fever are light-weight and are easily inhaled when airborne. Infections are caused by inhalation of particulate matter containing the spores. Valley Fever cannot be transmitted from person to person.

    While C. immitis grows as a mycelium in soil, it produces a spherule form after it infects an individual. That is, upon lodging in the lungs' alveoli, arthroconidia grow becoming spherules that develop internal septations (septated spherule). These septations form endospores. Eventual rupture of spherules release endospores, which ultimately repeat the cycle and spread the infection within the body.

    Nodules may form in the lungs around a spherule. When a spherule ruptures, it can release its contents into bronchi, thereby forming thin-walled cavities. Such cavities can result in symptoms including chest pain, hemoptysis, and/or persistent cough. Also, infection can spread into the bloodstream (fungemia) in immunocompromised persons.

    Fortunately, in most cases, infection with Valley Fever resolves, thereby leaving the patient with immunity to re-infection. Yet, in certain cases, infection may occur repeatedly or even become permanent.

    A healthy lifestyle, diet, nutrition, and supplementing with foundational supplements and immune-fortifying formulas can greatly boost the health of the body and strengthen its immune system. When the body and its immune system are kept strong, there is not only a greater chance that an individual will avoid Valley Fever, but also a correspondent reduction of its impact upon health if or when the body contracts it.

    VALLEY FEVER SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

    Symptomatic infections represent just 40% of cases. Valley Fever symptoms are typically flu-like. They may include fever, cough, headaches, and rashes, as well as pains in muscles and joints.

    Some patients fail to recover and develop chronic pulmonary infection or widespread "disseminated" (i.e., systemic) infection possibly affecting the meninges, soft tissues, joints, and/or bones. Not surprisingly, individuals who are immunocompromised are more susceptible to the systemic form of the infection.

    As noted, most individuals infected experience no symptoms or consequences. However, serious complications can occur when patients have weakened immune systems. These complications include severe pneumonia, lung nodules, and systemic infection (as noted above). In fact, the systemic form of Coccidioidomycosis can severely damage the body, and cause skin ulcers, abscesses, bone lesions, swollen joints, heart inflammation, and other problems like meningitis.

    AVOIDANCE AND PREVENTION OF VALLEY FEVER

    The best way to avoid contracting Valley Fever is to prudently avoid the spores that cause it. This might mean avoiding digging in the desert. For example, use caution while preparing garden beds or doing other types of yard work (e.g., while digging ditches for laying pipe or irrigation hoses). Also, avoid being outside during periods of high winds, especially in areas where there a large amount of ground disturbance (e.g., near construction sites). This includes using prudence when exercising (e.g., running, biking, hiking) during dust storms, times of high winds, and especially in dust-prone, wind-swept areas.

    Currently, recommended  measures to prevent exposure to the spores causing Valley Fever include respirator protection for persons engaged in agriculture, construction and others working outside in the endemic areas. Dust control measures such as planting grass and wetting the soil, and also limiting exposure to dust storms are advisable for residential areas in endemic areas.

    FOR PREVENTION & RECOVERY: MAINTAIN STRONG IMMUNITY

    Beyond avoiding contact with the spores that cause Valley Fever, it is vitally important to maintain a strong immune system. A strong immune system can ward off or mitigate symptoms even when the body contracts Valley Fever. Not maintaining a strong immune system can lead to full blown symptoms, illness, debilitation, and other health consequences relating to inadequate immunity (e.g., the potential for developing other health conditions). In rare cases, Valley Fever and its complications can be fatal.

    Basic means for maintaining a strong immune system include proper diet, exercise, rest, and positive outlook. I will deal with a few of these basic means in greater depth below. However, the focus of this article will primarily be on dietary supplements and their role in protecting the body from Valley Fever and its effects.

    A SUGGESTED PROGRAM FOR AVOIDING AND/OR MITIGATING VALLEY FEVER

    DIET

    One of the most basic elements for creating and maintaining optimal health is proper diet (see Rejuvenation Program). There is, in fact, no single "proper" diet for everyone. The optimal diet for an individual will depend on many factors, including age, gender, activity level, exposures to environmental toxins, food sensitivities and/or allergic responses, stress levels, blood type, genetics, and many other factors. Indeed, an optimal diet for a given individual changes over time.

    That said, we recommend a varied diet high in vegetables (including greens) that provides plenty of raw foods, high-quality proteins, fiber, and complex carbohydrates (e.g., organic vegetables and fruits instead of refined, processed, and/or packaged foods). We highly recommend consuming foods that have been grown using organic and/or biodynamic methods. This helps to reduce exposure to pesticides and other agrochemicals, as well as genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

    CORNERSTONES OF HEALTH: FOUNDATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

    High-quality foods and a healthy diet are the basis for good health. Consuming a healthy diet, therefore, is one the first lines of defense in maintaining both health and a strong immune system that can successfully ward off diseases like Valley Fever.

    Today, however, even a so-called "good" diet often does not provide adequate nutrition to keep a person healthy. There are many reasons that diet cannot typically provide all the nutrients required for optimal health. One set of reasons revolves around the fact that our food supply is compromised. These include 1) Depletion of soils over time (and the failure to re-plete them with nutrients), 2) the rise of industrial agriculture that both depletes the soil and poisons it with a cocktail of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and chemical fertilizers, 3) the prevalence of (and contamination of the foods supply by) genetically modified foods (GMOs) that have never been proven safe (and which studies are now showing to be harmful to health), 4) the addition of toxic additives (e.g., preservatives) to certain foods, 5) Processing and practices (such as radiation of foods) that reduce viability and nutritional value. This list could go on.

    For these reasons, we at HPDI first recommend the use of four specific types of foundational supplements. The foundational supplements we recommend are: 1) a High-Potency Multivitamin providing high-quality forms of nutrients (e.g., coenzyme vitamins; minerals in Kreb cycle form like malates), 2) Super Antioxidant Formulas (that include vitamin C and Nrf2 activators) (like Ultimate Protector™ or PRO-C™), 3) Essential Fats (providing a balanced ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids), 4) High-RNA Superfoods, especially the Rejuvenate!™ line of superfoods we have formulated for to provide therapeutic levels of dietary nucleic acids.

    People sometimes ask us to offer supplement recommendations to improve their health. We have always started with the four foundational supplements. Even if a person takes no other supplements beyond these four types, they typically report better health. The reason is simple: improved nutrition equals improved health. Too often, we see individuals trying a few types of vitamins, some amino acids, a few herbs, etc. This represents an incomplete approach because it fails to address the underlying need for consistent intake of high levels of basic nutrients for which most diets do not provide.

    In contrast to a seemingly random approach relying on a few targeted nutrients, we often see a "shotgun" approach in which a person attempts to take an extremely wide variety of supplements they have heard can improve their specific problem or to boost general health. This may be better than taking few (or no) supplements, but unless the body's need for truly essential nutrients is met, a wider variety of different types of supplements may not produce optimal results.

    Foundational supplements cover all the basic needs of the body. In nearly all cases, it is only after the body's requirements for basic health are met that we begin to suggest "Enhancement" supplements that can take health to the next level (so to speak) or condition-specific supplements (e.g., Joint Health Formula) formulated to focus on the health of particular organ or body system.

    For purposes of keeping the body strong in order to protect it against Valley Fever or mitigate its effects, foundational supplements remain the starting point, and by themselves will help create a high level of health.

When dealing with a serious illness, such as Valley Fever, it is important to provide the body with a good probiotic formula.

     ADDITIONAL FORMULAS FOR VALLEY FEVER

    Additional nutrients that may be helpful include Nascent Iodine (8-20 drops daily on an empty stomach), Echinacea (as drops or capsules), Digestive Enzymes / Digase (2–3 caps with each meal), Garlic (fresh or enteric coated tabs–4 tabs/day), Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil (1/4 tsp 2–3 times daily in water), Myo-Mag (2–5 caps/day-provides magnesium & malic acid), Joint Health Formula – if experiencing joint problems (6–8 capsules daily), and Selenium from l-selenomethionine (200 mcg/day).

    In most cases of Valley Fever, the immune system is severely depressed, which in turn may allow for other problems such as Candida albicans infections and food allergies. It is important to reduce as many immunological challenges as possible; to take supplements which help to rebuild the immune response and strengthen the body. It is also important detoxify the body as much as possible, and to make positive lifestyle changes in the diet, exercise, stress, relaxation, etc. (see suggestions below).

    The Suggested Daily Supplement Schedule (see Table 1 below) should provide a solid starting point for building or rebuilding health. However, the table and the other suggestions in this article do not necessarily represent a comprehensive program for regaining your health. You may need to do further research on Valley Fever in order to find additional sources of information that can help you given your current health status and unique situation.

    MORE DIETARY TIPS

    As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, a good diet is vitally important for good health. Here are a few more tips for maintaining a healthy diet.

    Consume a varied diet that is relatively higher in leans proteins, complex carbohydrates, and fiber, as well as relatively lower in fats and simple carbohydrates. Avoid processed/refined foods. Eat organic vegetables, fruits, whole grains (e.g., brown rice, millet, and spelt), beans, nuts and seeds (chia, sunflower, flax, pumpkin, almond, walnut and sesame in small amounts.

    Try eating Hank's Vegetable Soup several times a week. Try juicing fresh organic vegetables (e.g., carrots, celery, beets, parsley) using a juicer. Drinking 12–16 ounces of juice daily or at least a few times a week. You will see a noticeable difference in your health. Fresh juice also provides excellent nutrition for recovery and healing, and helps detoxify the body.

    For non-vegetarians, good sources of lean proteins can include free-range organic meats (including beef and poultry) and small quantities of wild-caught fish (small fish are better because fish lower on the food chain tend to contain fewer toxins). Vegetarians can enjoy various high-protein organic grains (e.g., quinoa), seeds and nuts, organic (and/or raw) dairy, and limited quantities or organic, fermented soy (tempeh and tofu).

    Avoid sweets (sugar), processed/refined foods (white bread and pasta), preservatives, and toxic food additives like artificial flavors and colors. Symptoms can be exacerbated by allergic reactions to the food you eat. Be observant to correlations between symptoms and the foods you have eaten. Drink purified water.

    A FEW THINGS TO AVOID

    Avoid exposure to chemicals such as cleaning solvents, pesticides, paints, hairsprays and toxic cosmetics, and cigarette smoke. Also, avoid excessive exposure to gasoline fumes and diesel soot, wood smoke, gas from kitchen ranges, etc.

    EXERCISE

    Exercise is always important. As you've probably heard many times before, it's good for circulation of blood and lymph. It can help maintain functional strength, lung capacity, strong immunity, and brain function. Exercise also improves mood, quality-of-life, and longevity.

    So be sure to get an adequate amount of exercise for you at least three times a week for 30 minutes or more. Walking, swimming, yoga, and tai chi are excellent forms of exercise. Listen to your body. Don't overdo exercise, yet work toward greater intensity levels.

    If you are currently suffering from Valley Fever and are low in energy, then be sure only to do as much exercise as you can do reasonably. As you recover, you can increase your duration and/or intensity.

    Also, it is good to practice relaxation and/or stress reduction techniques daily. These can include meditation, prayer, and/or deep breathing exercises (e.g., pranayama). If you already do yoga, tai chi, qi gong, or take walks in nature, then your relaxation techniques may be built into your exercise regimen.

The need for effective, natural measures supporting blood sugar stabilization has never been greater.

    As millions of people around the globe adopt western-type diets and sedentary lifestyles, obesity rates skyrocket—as do health care costs associated with diabetes. Indeed, it often appears as though the rise of diabetes, pre-diabetes, and blood sugar related conditions are destined to continue their relentless rise.

    SOLUTIONS FOR DIABETES AND BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL

    The problem may be complex, but many of the solutions are surprisingly simple (even if not 'easy' given all the variables from an entrenched corporate food system that encourages consumption to lack of education about healthy living).

    These solutions include changes made to diet and lifestyle. They include consuming little or no sugar and refined foods (e.g., processed flour and simple carbohydrates), and fewer empty calories (e.g, sodas sweetened with high fructose corn syrup) of all kinds. Making healthier choices like complex carbohydrates (e.g., vegetables), more raw foods, lean proteins, healthy fats, and only use no (or low) glycemic sweeteners (like stevia or erythritol). Aim to consume an organic, whole foods diet as much as possible.

    Daily or near daily exercise that can include walking, hiking, biking, swimming. And meditation and other stress-reducing and bliss-inducing activities like yoga, tai chi, qi-gong, deep breathing exercises, and time spent in nature.

    These few practices (above) by themselves effectively support positive blood sugar changes, help reduce body weight, and lower adverse stress chemicals in the bloodstream. Not only can they help head off progression to full blown diabetes, but also put your health on a trajectory toward optimal wellness and deep-rooted well being.

    Moreover, these practices can increase the body's resistance to adverse blood sugar changes and buffer it in times of stress, so that reasonable health can be assured even in a less than perfect world where ideal dietary choices sometimes are not readily available, and/or when environmental exposures cannot easily be avoided.

    Note: Zinc and chromium are both known to help reduce blood sugar. However, when taken together their combined effects exceed their effects when taken separately. Blood Sugar Support formula provides therapeutic levels of chromium and some zinc. Taking additional supplemental zinc daily (e.g., 1–2 capsules of Double Zinc Plus) will boost zinc intake into the therapeutic range, and thereby more effectively support blood sugar control efforts via improved nutrition.

    DIETARY APPROACHES FOR DIABETES

    The most important dietary recommendation for diabetics or anyone attempting to stabilize their blood sugar is to stop (or dramatically reduce) consuming sugars and all refined or simple carbohydrates. That is, the less you consume of foods containing sugar (or that break down quickly into sugars), the better. Refined or simple carbohydrates include white breads, pasta, white rice, and white potatoes.

    We also suggest consuming smaller, more frequent meals and snacks. This strategy can keep blood sugar on a more even keel, and avoids precipitous drops in blood sugar levels. Keeping a good balance of complex carbohydrates (vegetables, nuts, and seeds) and high quality proteins can be important (see more below).

    LIMIT GRAINS

    Beyond foods containing sugar, many nutritionists advise diabetics not to consume any grains for at least three to six months. Not only will this help reduce blood sugar, but it may also contribute to less inflammation in the body, as well as weight loss, which in the case of many diabetics is a necessity for improved health.

    After three to six months, depending on the blood sugar control status of the individual, whole grains may be reintroduced in small quantities. Whole grains may include organic brown rice, organic buckwheat, organic millet, and possibly organic sprouted breads (e.g., Ezekiel or Essene breads). Whole grains are complex carbohydrates, and they require metabolic activity for digestion. Unlike simple carbohydrates, they do not rapidly break down into sugars and overwhelm the bloodstream with them.

    We also encourage you to know their blood type and to familiarize yourself with the foods that are beneficial, detrimental, or neutral for your blood type (see Eat Right for Your Type and other books by Peter D'Adamo). For example, it is well known that blood type O exhibits greater incidence of problems related to digesting grains. However, no blood type is immune from blood sugar problems related to consuming refined, overly processed grains.

    INCREASE VEGETABLES

    We recommend an alkaline-forming diet that maintains a urine pH between 6.5 and 7.0 (for recommendations see chart “Effect of Foods on Body Chemistry” or the table below). An acidic body is far more susceptible to degenerative diseases. Also, when the body remains acidic over a prolonged period, it must rob minerals from bones in order maintain its pH balance. An alkaline body can therefore more easily maintain stronger bones and structural integrity.

    The best way to ensure your diet remains alkaline forming (and hence your body stays alkaline) is to consume lots of vegetables and fruits. Emphasize leafy green vegetables, which promote alkalinity most effectively. However, most vegetables (with a few exceptions) help keep you alkaline. Ultimately, a balanced whole-foods diet that includes high intake of vegetables, vegetable juices, and nuts will very effectively keep you alkaline.

    Vegetables provide complex carbohydrates, which contain more fiber and take longer for the body to digest. They also provide far more nutrients (including vitamins, minerals) than simple carbohydrates. Thus, complex carbohydrates do not subject the body to such extreme blood sugar swings compared to simple carbohydrates. Plus the greater nutritional value offers nutrients that support the body's blood sugar response.

    Consuming soups is a tasty, healthy way to increase your vegetable intake and to dramatically alkalinize your body. Try eating “Hank's Vegetable Soup” several times a week. Modify this recipe, as you wish.

    Try to consume at least some vegetables raw. In fact, aim for 50–60% raw, if possible. Raw foods provide enzymes that help break down foods. Try consuming a nearly total raw foods diet for a week or two, and see how you feel. Many people find that the benefits are so great that they increase their raw foods to 80% or more.

    DRINK FRESH VEGETABLE JUICES WITH SUPERFOODS

    Another great way to stay alkaline is to drink vegetable juices daily. Preferably, you can make juices yourself with a juicer (or visit a juice bar). Start making juice with carrots, apples, beets (including greens), celery, cucumber, and leafy greens (spinach, parsley, cilantro).

    Then, consider adding spicier ingredients like ginger, lemon, garlic, and even hot peppers. The main point is to make juicing a regular part of your life and to make juices you enjoy. (My favorite juice recipe is 'The Doctor.')

    Drink at least 12–16 ounces of juice daily (or as often as possible). Then ideally work your way up to one to two quarts (32–64 ounces) per day. This is the level at which the greatest benefits of juicing will be realized. In fact, I will go so far as to say that drinking two quarts of organic juice per day is one of the very best things you can do to speed progress in supporting the effectiveness of the body's blood sugar control mechanisms.

    Adding chlorella, spirulina, and/or Rejuvenate!™ superfoods directly into your fresh juices boosts their nutritional value, and brings the unique healing power of dietary nucleic acids into your body.

    Dietary nucleic acids (RNA, DNA, nucleotides, and nucleosides) are known to help with blood sugar control, diabetes, and stimulate healing in the body. Over time, nucleic acids help the body to rebuild itself, provide greater energy (as ATP) for biological processes, improve cellular communications, boost oxygenation, support tissue repair, and normalize overall body function.

    Juicers come in many styles and sizes. There are good juicers of all types. Check out centrifugal juicers (e.g., Breville), masticator juicers (e.g., Champion), twin gear (e.g., Green Star), and single augur juicers (e.g., Hurom). You often get what you pay for with juicers. I favor certain juicers like the Green Star, which costs more, but offers far greater durability and includes a 12-year warranty.

    A NOTE ON FRUIT

    Fruits also are alkaline forming and offer dietary fiber and other nutrients. However, diabetics (and others concerned about blood sugar) must watch total sugar intake. So, emphasize intake of low glycemic fruits (e.g., berries) (see Carbohydrates in Fruits and Vegetables chart), and keep intake of sugary fruits (and fruit juices) low, especially at the beginning of any program to control blood sugar. As the body's blood sugar responses normalize, it may be appropriate to include more fruits in the diet.

    Be sure not only to emphasize fruits low on the glycemic index, but also fresh fruits and fresh fruit juices. That is, fresh organic fruits, fruit juices, and fruit smoothies that you make yourself are much healthier than processed fruit or fruit juice products you find in a grocery store. Frozen organic berries are one exception. In addition to to a juicer, a blender is a must-have tool for creating fresh, healthy concoctions (such as smoothies) in your kitchen.

    FIBER FOR DIABETES AND BLOOD SUGAR CONTROL

    The importance of dietary fiber to blood sugar stabliization cannot be overestimated. As previously stated, vegetables provide good amounts fiber. Whole grains and fruits also provide fiber, but depending on your status on a blood sugar stabilization program, you may not yet be consuming too many grains or fruits.

    Nuts and seeds (e.g., sunflower, almond, chia, walnuts, and sesame) in small amounts (1–2 ounces) are good options for more fiber, as well as providing high quality proteins, minerals, vitamins, and other important nutrients. If you are already consuming smaller, but more frequent meals, you will find that nuts and seeds fit well into this strategy. They are portable, mixable, and store well.

    Beans are an excellent source of fiber and complex carbohydrates. Notably, beans naturally contain high amounts of dietary nucleic acids (RNA, DNA) that are known to help the body deal with blood sugar issues. if you have trouble digesting beans, then consume only in moderation, then gradually increase as the body adjusts to them.

    We also recommend a dietary fiber supplement. Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula not only provides significant amounts of dietary fiber, but also nutrients that support intestinal health.     A ROLE FOR PROTEIN

    We recommend for blood sugar issues consuming a diet relatively high in protein. Lean proteins can help stabilize blood sugar. For non-vegetarians, proteins can include lean meats, including organic beef, organic turkey and other poultry, or wild-caught fish (e.g., salmon). Portion sizes do not have to be especially large, and it may be more effective to serve smaller portions more frequently. For vegetarians or vegans, there are many options for protein, including leafy greens, nuts and seeds, and organic soy (in small quantities).

    ITEMS TO AVOID

    Beyond sugars and refined (or processed) foods, some other items to avoid (or reduce) while on a program to stabilize blood sugar include alcohol, tobacco, coffee, fried foods, and foods containing artificial preservatives, flavors, colors, and sweeteners (e.g., aspartame and sucralose). Acceptable sweeteners include stevia and polyols (e.g., xylitol or erythritol).

    Avoid or reduce consumption of dairy products (although some raw dairy products may be okay for some people). Drink purified or spring water, thereby avoiding toxic chlorine and fluoride, which both adversely affect metabolism and the thyroid gland (among their many adverse effects).

    Avoid whenever possible consuming foods or drinks from plastic containers, or from metal cans sealed using bisphenol-A. Instead, store and serve foods using glass, metal (e.g., stainless steel), or ceramic containers. Intake of plastics into the body has been implicated in blood sugar control problems, including the development of diabetes. In addition, avoidance of plastics helps reduce intake of xenoestrogens, which are endocrine disruptors, and harmful to health.

    As noted above, we recommend Nascent Iodine to support metabolism and the thyroid gland. Proper thyroid function is critical to the body's metabolism, energy (ATP) production, digestion, and many other functions.

    Nascent iodine supports optimal metabolism, as well as processes of energy production and detoxification in the body. The vast majority of American are deficient in iodine. Thyroid issues often accompany problems with blood sugar control and diabetes. Iodine is an important mineral the sufficiency of which is important for everyone in order to maintain proper metabolic health.

    EXERCISE AND DIABETES

    Exercise is important for all aspects of health, including metabolism. While exercise is important for all individuals, it may be especially important for individuals with diabetes blood sugar control problems. This partly relates to the fact that obesity is considered a primary risk factor for Type 2 Diabetes. While not all diabetics are overweight or obese, many of them certainly exhibit these characteristics.

    Because being overweight or obese is associated with blood sugar problems, anyone who is overweight or obese should exercise regularly. This does not mean to exercise beyond one's limits. Start slowly and then increase duration and intensity according to increased capacities for exercise.

    Ideally, you should exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes three times per week. Walking, hiking, jogging, or swimming are ideal because they emphasize cardiovascular health. However, even yoga or tai chi can be practiced at a level that burns fats, increases muscle, and elevates heart and breathing rates.

    RELAXATION, MEDITATION, AND MINDFULNESS

    Practicing meditation and/or utilizing relaxation techniques (e.g., biofeedback) supports the body to balance emotional states, reduce stress (and the 'fight or flight' systems that taxes the adrenal glands). Meditation, or time taken in nature, deep breathing, mindfulness, and quiet peaceful time (alone or with others) can rejuvenate mind, body, and spirit. It also gives the body a chance to slow down, rest, and heal.

    Regular meditative or relaxation practices protect the body and mind from excessive external pressures, and create an internal milieu more conducive to normal biological function. Thus, such practices keep us more youthful, more attuned, and better able to respond appropriately to whatever life requires of us. From the perspective of blood sugar control, deeper states of relaxation in the body can translate into less blood sugar instability, partly due to improved stress response.

    We also recommend regular massage and bodywork in our Master Rejuvenation Program. The benefits are many and include muscle relaxation, improved blood (and lymph fluid) circulation, structural alignment, and detoxification. For diabetics or individuals with blood sugar control, relaxation and improved circulation are especially important.

    OTHER RECOMMENDED PRACTICES

    There are several other practices we highly recommend to support optimal health for individuals dealing with blood sugar control problems and/or diabetes. One of these is doing a periodic (e.g., once per season) juice cleanse that includes a kidney cleanse.

    I will discuss how to do a complete kidney cleanse in a forthcoming article. A kidney cleanse involves 3–5 days (minimum) of drinking fresh vegetable juices with superfoods.

    In the morning, before juicing, you make a drink using the juice of two lemons or limes, preferably fresh. Mix the lemon (or lime) juice into 16–32 ounces of water, add some maple syrup to taste (optional), and a pinch of cayenne (optional). Fifteen to twenty minutes later, drink two cups of hot (or warm) kidney tea (see resources list below).

    Within an hour of drinking the lemonade (or limeade) and hot tea, prepare a drink that includes fresh vegetable juice (8–16 ounces) plus chlorella or Rejuvenate! superfood(s) (1–4 tablespoons). The original Rejuvenate!™ (greens) is the best one for this purpose, but you can use any of them.

    The remainder of the day you consume additional amounts of fresh vegetable juices optionally mixed with supefoods. Here is a recipe for my favorite vegetable juice recipe ('The Doctor') that may inspire you to make your own vegetable juices customized to your taste and palate.

    Ideally for at least three days, you'll just drink lemonade and vegetable juices plus super foods. However, if you decide to eat, then just make sure that everything you eat is raw, organic, and fresh (e.g., not cooked or pasteurized). For example, consume salads, vegetables, or other raw foods away from the times you consume your lemon drink or vegetable juices.

    Continue drinking lemonade (or limeade) for at least three to five days. Seven days is better. After completing the kidney cleanse, you can continue eating raw for a day or two to ease the transition back to regular foods. Another option is moving onto a liver cleanse, which I will discuss in depth in a forthcoming article.

    A further option is moving from a kidney cleanse onto the lemonade diet (in any season), in which you consume lemonade (or limeade) as your primary source of nourishment for up to two weeks. You can optionally include vegetable juices while on the lemonade diet.

    If you add vegetable juices and/or superfoods to your lemonade diet, then you can go longer, up to perhaps four weeks or longer depending on the quantity of additional nutrients you consume, and how you feel while consuming lemonade, vegetable juice, and superfoods. You can expect some lulls in energy, but overall you may feel more energized and you will certainly be highly alkaline.

    CONCLUSION: PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD

    Attaining blood sugar control may seem a daunting task, especially at times when progress seems slow. However, remember that it is primarily unhealthy eating and lifestyle patterns that create problems with blood sugar. There is no time like the present to start making positive changes that can support your body's natural capacity to control its blood sugar.

    Changing habits and choosing a healthy diet that excludes simple sugars and reduces carbohydrates takes time. Yet, making such changes offers virtually foolproof means at least to improve blood sugar control, if not firmly establish a program that leads to dealing with the problem effectively over the long run, and perhaps solving it once and for all.
